1. Know Your Numbers (The “Chasing Arrows”)
That little triangle on the bottom of your plastic container isn’t just a decoration; it’s a code. Here is what we look for at our Havillah Hubs:
- Number 1 (PET/PETE): Think soda bottles, water bottles, and peanut butter jars. Status: HIGHLY RECYCLABLE. These are the “gold” of the recycling world.
- Number 2 (HDPE): Milk jugs, shampoo bottles, and detergent containers. Status: HIGHLY RECYCLABLE. These are sturdy and can be turned into everything from pipes to playground equipment.
- Number 4 (LDPE): Bread bags and squeezable bottles. Status: RECYCLABLE. However, these often require specific collection points because they can tangle in traditional sorting machines.
- Number 5 (PP): Yogurt tubs and bottle caps. Status: RECYCLABLE. Increasingly valuable for industrial reuse.
The “Red Flags”: Numbers 3 (PVC) and 6 (Polystyrene/Styrofoam) are much harder to process and are often rejected by local recyclers. When possible, try to avoid buying products in these materials.
2. The Golden Rule: “Empty, Clean, and Dry”
A single half-full soda bottle can contaminate an entire bag of dry paper or cardboard. Before you drop your plastics at a Havillah Hub:
- Rinse it out: A quick swish of water to remove food residue makes a world of difference.
- Shake it dry: Moisture can lead to mold, which lowers the value of the material.
3. To Cap or Not to Cap?

Modern recycling technology can now separate the different types of plastic (the bottle vs. the cap) during the crushing and washing process. Keeping them on prevents the small caps from falling through the sorting machinery and becoming litter.
